Title: Folkloric Futures: Designing a Digital Archive of Caribbean Speculative Storytelling
Description: This project develops an interactive Omeka-based digital archive that preserves and reimagines
Caribbean folkloric figures—such as the soucouyant, douen, and mermaid/farimaid—across
literature, oral storytelling, and visual art. In collaboration with Caribbean artists and drawing on
speculative and digital humanities approaches, “Folkloric Futures” seeks to highlight the living
and evolving nature of Caribbean folklore. This presentation will not only focus on the content of
“Folklore Futures” but also the process of designing a culturally-relevant project. By navigating
questions of metadata, design, and ethical representation, I hope to show how the choices behind
building an archive ultimately shape the stories it can tell. Ultimately, the project invites us to see
how digital archives can spark new forms of teaching and collaboration in and beyond the
classroom
