SUMMARY:Summer Show & Tell: Humanities AI Research
DESCRIPTION:Chuck Mathewes and Matt Hedstrom (Religious Studies) and Alison
Booth (English and DHC) with the DH Center in the Library are offering a
Summer Show and Tell\, a showcase of research that uses some form of AI.
Our event schedules lighten up in the heat of summer–it's a chance for
academic faculty and graduate students and library faculty and staff to
learn from each other about the latest buzz/panic/range of tools. This was
prompted (we use the term in an older sense) by eye-opening conversations
that Chuck and Matt have hosted for faculty in Arts and Sciences.
\n\nResearch is the key word here\; it can be a small or large inquiry.
Speakers have been invited to offer ten minutes or less on an example of
their experience of AI working well\, doing something desirable\,
accurate\, efficient\, or even unpredictable. These are specific examples
of uses of various AI chatbot LLMs (large language models) for research.
 \n\nTo begin the event\, we'll acknowledge\, and for this event set aside\,
a whole range of important issues: AI and teaching\, the environment\, the
values of privacy and intellectual property\, the increasing
marginalization of non-English matters. And what gives with this expensive
approach modeling everyone’s utterance on the mass of digitized language
already used? Of course these topics are not off the table but the show and
tell is a conversation that might help us shape more innovative\, even
resistant use of AI in the university. \n\nPlanned presenters: Adrienne
Ghaly (environmental humanities\, trends in writing about
 biodiversity/English)\; Christian McMillen (Indian land sales/history)\;
Doug Ross (IATH developer) \n\nPlease register in advance to reserve your
seat. If you would like to present\, contact Alison Booth by Thursday\,
 July 3.\n\n \n\n
