The primary goal of Tech and Culture speaker series is to connect and inspire ALL members of our UVA community to take on new perspectives, learn emerging technologies and approaches, and build an inclusive culture in tech. Check out our website for more information https://bit.ly/wmpfall2021.

Join us for our second conversation with Dr. Angela Orebaugh, Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of Virginia.

Angela Orebaugh, Ph.D. is an educator, technologist, and author with a broad spectrum of expertise in information technology and cybersecurity.  She synergizes her 25+ years of hands-on strategic and technical experiences within industry, academia, and government to build academic programs and educate students.  Dr. Orebaugh is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of Virginia where she developed and teaches a variety of courses including cybersecurity, smart cities, internet of things, and sustainability.  She was the 2020 recipient of the prestigious Adelle F. Robertson Award for Excellence in Teaching.  Prior to moving into academia full time, Dr. Orebaugh was Chief Scientist and Cybersecurity Fellow at Booz Allen Hamilton where she supported some exciting projects for NIST, the Department of Defense, and various other clients.  She is an internationally recognized author of several bestselling technology books, author of over thirty published articles, and co-author of seven National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) publications.  She was honored in the 2019 book Women Know Cyber as one of the 100 Fascinating Females Fighting Cybercrime.  Dr. Orebaugh was selected as one of Information Magazine’s Security 7 in 2013 and was appointed as a Booz Allen Hamilton Fellow in 2012.

This session will provide attendees with an overview of her journey as a hacker turned corporate executive.  Learn about Angela’s career starting out as a programmer, moving to a network engineer, and finally to cybersecurity consultant.  Her career has spanned from technical to executive leadership at a $5B company.  She will share her stories, tips, and lesson’s learned along the way.

In addition, Dr. Orebaugh has kindly offered to meet with any attendees after the session on-Grounds to continue the conversation.  The registration form will ask you to identify if you would like to take part in this added component from 4-4:30pm.
