World Digital Preservation Day
“Join us and others around the globe at we celebrate the second-ever World Digital Preservation Day! (#wdpd2018). Our celebration this year will yet again have special baked digital preservation treats and coffee, but we’re also adding digital preservation prizes for participation.
Like last year, our celebration has two parts, and runs from 1-2:30pm. Please come for as long or as little as you like:
Part 1: 5 minute foundation (1-1:30 pm):
Maintenance work is core to the central tenets of digital preservation, so we’ll be sharing updated tools and tips to get you started in digital preservation of web resources, as well some personal digital archiving tools and approaches.
Did you participate last year and think you’ve got this? Great! Come again anyway. These approaches and tools change all of the time, and when was the last time you exported and/or saved anything? (See previous statement on maintenance).
Part 2: Deep dive: Emulation and Software Preservation (1:30-2:30pm):
For those interested in digging into what the heck we’re talking about with software preservation and concepts of emulation for preservation and access over time, this is your chance to find out!
(See the Software Preservation Network’s Fostering a Community of Practice Grant, which includes UVa Library, here: http://www.softwarepreservationnetwork.org/fcop/)
This part of the day will aim to leave you with a baseline understanding of emulation and the need for software preservation, as well as a better understanding of how this collection and preservation approach could have an impact on work across the library, from liaisons and public services to special collections and description. Lauren will attempt to brave at least a partial live demo environment, so come celebrate failure, if anything!
I hope to see you there, and bring your digital preservation questions, concerns, and curiosity!”
