Is *Science* Bad for Science: Intro to Critiques of Scholarly Publishing
Thomas Jefferson famously compared ideas to a candle’s flame because both can be shared freely without diminution. Over the last century an extraordinarily profitable industry has made blocking the spread of ideas its core business model. In addition to this fundamental dysfunction, critics have raised a series of objections to the status quo in scholarly publishing, and proposed a variety alternative approaches, typically collected under the banner of “open access.” This workshop will walk through some of the core critiques of traditional scholarly publishing and suggest concrete steps individual researchers can take toward reform.
