AI Prompt Engineering with the CLEAR Framework

In this workshop, we will learn how to effectively use generative AI (Microsoft Copilot) and evaluate its output based on the CLEAR Framework, a 5-step system to optimize performance and get desired results from your prompts. Participants will explore the five CLEAR principles—Concise, Logical, Explicit, Adaptive, and Reflective—and apply them to real-world examples. We will specifically focus on evaluating the results of our prompts to gauge their reliability, biases, and sticking points. By the end of the workshop, attendees will be equipped with practical strategies to craft effective prompts, assess AI responses, and integrate prompt engineering into their teaching and research workflows.

Our policy is that we do not record live workshops in order to encourage robust Q&A. However, you can always find the full workshop materials for all of our workshops at: https://library.virginia.edu/data/training/past-workshops which allows you to work through the material at your own pace. We also encourage you to reach out to the instructor at any time for a one-on-one consult, and for specific or general questions about any of the topics we cover.
