In this session join Mona Kasra, Associate Professor at the University of Virginia, Department of Art and Department of Drama, and Director of the Miller Arts Scholars Program for the following talk: Visual Integrity in an Age of Synthetic Media and Generative AI
Generative AI technologies capable of producing highly convincing images, video, and audio are reshaping how knowledge is created, circulated, and evaluated. While these systems expand creative and scholarly possibilities, they also challenge longstanding assumptions about visual evidence, authorship, and authenticity. From laboratory sciences to archival humanities, journalism, and medical imaging, synthetic and AI-manipulated visuals introduce significant risks to credibility and trust across disciplines. This talk examines the technical capabilities and limitations of generative visual systems, including issues of bias, copyright, and authorship. It addresses the growing threat of visual misinformation and synthetic fraud, explores methods for verification and detection, and introduces emerging provenance standards and authenticity infrastructures designed to strengthen transparency, traceability, and accountability in digital environments.
All are invited to register and attend. For questions, please contact Meridith Wolnick (maw2tj@virginia.edu) or Bethany Mickel (bethanym@virginia.edu).
