Memory Without Origin: Provenance, Consent, and Trust in the Age of Generative AI - (The Ethical Dimension of AI Literacy Series)

Join us for the first talk in The Ethical Dimension of AI Literacy Series.  In this session, Leo Lo, University Librarian and Dean of Libraries will present the following talk:

Memory Without Origin: Provenance, Consent, and Trust in the Age of Generative AI
In the age of generative AI, information can circulate at scale without clear origin, context, or accountability, creating new ethical risks for universities and other knowledge institutions. Drawing on the library’s central role as steward of the public record, this talk introduces the UVA Archival AI Protocol, a practical framework for deciding when and how AI systems should be allowed to use archival and special collections materials. The session focuses on provenance, consent, and institutional control, and offers a simple set of questions faculty, staff, and students can apply to evaluate responsible AI use in research, teaching, and campus work.
